Mount Redoubt Volcano Erupts

Click photo for larger.

Mount Redoubt, in Alaska, has erupted five times overnight, with an ash plume more than 9 miles into the air. Alaska's largest city has not yet seen falling ash, though some fine gray dust was falling Monday morning on some communities north of Anchorage. The ash began falling around daybreak and continued into the middle of morning. Alaska Airlines on Monday canceled 19 flights in and out of the Anchorage international airport because of the ash. The "ash" is actually super fine volcanic rock dust and is a very abrasive substance which can damage jet engines and even clog their function. The dust is also a big hazard to vehicles and extremely dangerous for animals and humans. Scientists have been watching Mount Redoubt all along knowing that even though its last eruption was nearly twenty years ago the volcano was set for more.
