In The Ditch

There was a two car accident this evening. The wreck happened on Roosevelt just across from the Town Pump Truck Stop. One car landed in the north side ditch along the BNSF Railroad tracks. That car was harder to recover by Cliff Fey of Cliff's Towing. There was plenty of damage to the autos but no injuries were reported to those in the cars.

Fingers In The Pie

Wall Street
Click photo for larger.

With everyone's finger in the pie, just what will we get out of the "Stimulus Plan?" CNN says, "Roughly 97% of American households could see tax savings..."
The Tax Policy Center crunched the numbers and concluded that the average savings would be $1,179. But how much a household actually gets depends on income, marital status and whether a filer has children. The savings range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand.
The law, which President Obama signed on Tuesday, contains a range of tax breaks for individuals. Those likely to affect the greatest number of households are the new Making Work Pay credit worth up to $400 ($800 for joint filers); a patch to protect middle- and upper-middle-income families from having to pay the Alternative Minimum Tax; and expansions of the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit for low-income families.
There are also breaks that address specific situations: a new credit for first-time home buyers, a sales tax deduction for car buyers and a new credit to help pay for college tuition. For people receiving unemployment benefits, the first $2,400 will be tax free.

Electric Power Outage

For a short time there was a electric power outage on the north-east side of Shelby. The outage happened at about 8:30 PM and was thought to be connected to a reported car fire in the area. Officials investigated and there seemed to be little or no damage and the power was soon back on.

Sheriff Dept. Gets New Durangos

Photo:
2009 Durango

Updated 2/18/09
Toole County Sheriff's Dept. has just taken delivery on two new Dodge Durangos. This adds to the Durangos that the dept. has had for some time now. These SUVs give more off road ability than the other patrol vehicles which are Chevrolet Impala sedans. The department was given these new Durangos by Homeland Security through Border Patrol for participation in "Operation Stone Garden." Operation Stone Garden is a local federally funded program where Homeland Security and Toole County Sheriff dept. patrol the north Toole County border with Canada. By cooperating, Toole County Sheriff dept. gets "goodies" such as enhanced computers, patrol vehicles and much more. One such item is the new "LIVESCAN" fingerprinting system being installed in the county jail. Under-sheriff, Mike Lamey was reported in the Shelby Promoter as saying, "The CAD system will allow us to have better command and control in any incident occurring in the county and the LIVESCAN will allow us instant access and identification of people and suspects by the FBI fingerprint database." "Fuel, vehicle maintenance, wages, everything is covered by the federal dollars with no local tax dollars being spent on this operation," also reported Lamey.

Plane Crash, 9/11 Widow On board

Photo:
Eckert and Obama

Beverly Eckert who strangely enough was widowed when her husband died in one of the 9/11 buildings at New York City, has herself died in a blazing plane crash. The crash happened Thursday at about 10:30 PM in northern New York State. Eckert was traveling to Buffalo to celebrate what would have been her late husband Sean Rooney's 58th birthday. "The fact that it was a plane crash, it was fire, it was reminiscent of 9/11 that way, that's just very difficult," said Carol Ashley, a retired schoolteacher from Long Island whose daughter died at the World Trade Center. Obama, speaking in the White House's East Room Friday, said Eckert "was an inspiration to me and to so many others, and I pray that her family finds peace and comfort in the hard days ahead." Beverly Eckert was 57.
Just a week before her death, Eckert met with Obama at the White House as part of a group of 9/11 families and relatives of those killed in the bombing of the USS Cole. See the house that was destroyed. Click Here

County Looking To Add Housing

Commissioner Photos: Toole County
Allan Underdal

Ben Ober

Dave Miller

Toole County is seeking funding help from the Montana Department of Commerce for the building of more local housing. This housing will probably be similar to to Marias Manor and Crossroads Housing of Shelby. These projects were built next to each other about 30 years ago and have been very successful. They offer comfortable apartments to the disabled and seniors at a monthly rent which is based on a relatively small percentage of the resident's income. Crossroads Housing is not owned by the county but Marias Manor is.

NBMC tried to meet with Toole County Commissioners, Ben Ober and Dave Miller this morning but they appeared to be more interested in horseback riding in the Bob Marshal Wilderness than county business. When finally asked what they could tell us about the housing project so it could be published here, they just gave NBMC a pad and pen and a phone number... We have no idea who the person is that belongs to that cell phone number so we did not cold call them. NBMC will bring you more about this new housing when we find a real source of info. Commissioner and Chairman, Allan Underdal was not in the office when we were there at 10 AM.

Punxsutawney Phil

Click photo for larger.

Punxsutawney Phil, the "seer of seers and prognosticator of prognosticators," has once again made history with his annual weather report. Phil has seen his shadow, predicting that this already long winter will last for six more weeks. He emerged just after dawn in front of an estimated 13,000 witnesses. Phil was calm and collected before his fans, but his contemporary in New York, Staten Island Chuck was anything but calm... Chuck, evidently not liking politicians, used that event to take a chunk out of Mayor, Michael Bloomberg's hand. The groundhog, officially named Charles G. Hogg, drew blood from the billionaire, but Bloomberg was told there was no risk of rabies.

Punxsutawney Phil is a groundhog resident of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, USA. On February 2, (Groundhog Day) of each year, the town of Punxsutawney celebrates the beloved groundhog with a festive atmosphere of music and food. During the ceremony, which begins well before the winter sunrise, Phil emerges from his temporary home on Gobbler's Knob, located in a rural area about 2 mi (3.2 km) east of town. According to the tradition, if Phil sees his shadow and returns to his hole, the United States will have six more weeks of winter. If Phil does not see his shadow, spring will arrive early. The date of Phil's prognostication is known as Groundhog Day in the United States and Canada. During the rest of the year, Phil lives in the town library with his "wife" Phyllis. A select group, called the Inner Circle, take care of Phil year-round and also plan the annual ceremony. Members of the Inner Circle are recognizable by their top hats and tuxedos.
